The Gilt of Cain

Here is the first televised viewing of The Gilt of Cain a poem adorned by a sculpture. It's also an interview with the sculptor and myself .  There will eventually be a plaque showing the entire poem.

  1. I first read of this sculpture in the NYTimes and knew that I had to find it on my next trip to London. This was accomplished on 1July2014 and it was wonderful to view. I’ve talked about it over and over again.

  2. Hello Mr Sissay. A friend told me about the statue in Fenchurch Court which bears your admirable poem. Several websites spell the poem’s title as ‘The Gilt of Cain’, and I see your own website here has the same spelling. Forgive me asking why it’s not spelled ‘guilt’? Thank you and best wishes.

    • Gilt. The poem is all abut finance and slavery. Gilt “A gilt is a UK Government liability in sterling, issued by HM Treasury and listed on the London Stock Exchange. The term “gilt” or “gilt-edged security” is a reference to the primary characteristic of gilts as an investment: their security.”
