If you spend your time fixating on the ladder of poets on your scene and analysing their success or failiure then there is only one place to look if you reach the top. Down. We are a community of poets. I prefer orbits to describe a poets career progression. Get on the next ring. You’ll find it’s longer slower and more fulfilling. You can see other orbits too, outer and inner, the faster ones, smaller ones, larger ones slower ones. There is no competition. For propulsion find your next poem – that is the fuel for your spirit and your “career”.
Absolutely! The only competition I’m interested in is between the last poem and the latest one, always hoping that the words will have learned to leap a little higher this time.
This is so so true, and so necessary in all poetry communities the world over – here in Cape Town too 🙂
