I have taught in private and community schools for many years, but the way these schools treat Ethiopians is heart breaking.Ethiopians are suffering from racial discriminations interms of salaries, benefits and basic rights.Eventhough we teach the same subject in the same position with those foriegn teachers, the salary we get is by far less than them(3-4 folds less)and they are also provided with furnished houses while we spend 75% of our salary for rent. These schools violates our rights everyday and nothing happens to the foreign teachers no matter how bad they misbehave, but we get penalized for any misconduct we display which includes salary deductions, warning letters and terminations.Sometimes,Ethiopians get to just give the position to foriegners with salary four times greater.I have fought this racism fiercely in Greek community school(a cambridge center) where the racism and discrimination is out of bounds and I got terminated for it(to be specific i told them that I would expose the racism to Cambridge in my reply to a dramatic letter of warning). Here are my questions, are you aware of it?have you intervened in any way?
How do you help us fight it and avoid it once and for all?
Greek community and Gibson are the schools where the racism is wide and clear but there are another schools too.Dear Lmen Sisay,I am a big fan of your poem and I follow you on facebook.I would like to express my respect and appreciation for you!
Friend I can confirm that racism is evident in all communities. However this point does not address your particular problem. Thanks for writing me. Without going into your aprticular case I suggest you gather support from other people in this aprticular field (Ethiopian lecturers in British schools) for a support network that understands this particular nuance of racism in that environment. I am aware of racism in educational institutions. I am aware how difficult it is to prove. Support networks are invaluable. Best Wishes Lemn
