Ethiopian Airlines made history Wednesday by sending an all-female crew on a flight from Addis Ababa to Bangkok, Thailand. Captain Amsale Gualu was assisted by co-pilot, Selam Tesfaye,
The flight was the first in the 70-year history of the airline in which the whole crew was female. And that was not just the pilots: It included maintenance crew members and air traffic controllers.
Women also staffed cabin, ramp and airport operations, as well as onboard logistics, air safety and security jobs.. The airline wanted to show the world the important jobs African women now hold.
I am proud of Ethiopian Airlines for whom my father worked as a pilot. I think they were the best years of his life.
Ever since Lucy we have migrated. Migration is often temporary. We go on holiday. This is migration. We migrate from the villages of childhood to the towns and cities of adulthood. Airlines carry all our stories of migration.
I flew back from Addis on Ethiopian Airlines on Monday though this shot was taken in 2012 in Addis.
I love Ethiopian Airlines. It has carried me on my own incredible journey. And I hope it carries you and yours too. With this all women flight Ethiopian once again proves itself to be at the forefront: breaking new ground in the sky.
Lucy would be proud!
